Help Still Available For Winter Utility Bills

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Time is quickly running out on Pennsylvania's winter moratorium on utility cutoffs.

The program ends next week. Help is still available for low-income families, but they must act quickly.

The moratorium ends next Friday.

"LIHEAP is still available – it's going to go until April 15 this year, Dollar Energy Fund still has money available for people who need it so there's really no reason for these customers to be shut off," Joe Vallarian, a spokesman for Duquesne Light, said.

The North Hills Community Outreach can help, but time is critical.

"Because the LIHEAP and crisis applications have to go into Harrisburg to be approved and you will be shut off if there's a gap there in time," Fay Morgan, executive director of NHCO, said.

It takes at least a week to process the assistance request for LIHEAP and Dollar Energy Fund.

Last year, NHCO made stop gap payments for 98 families to keep their utilities on.
