The woman has been identified Kala Thomas, 25, of Garfield. According to Facebook postings, she was the mother of two sets of twins, and one set are still babies.
Thomas lived in the neighborhood, and police say they were told she was missing around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office says Thomas died of a gunshot wound to the head and her death has been ruled a homicide.
"She did not just fall down the hillside," said Sonya Toler, Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman.
Authorities say it's too early in the investigation to determine any persons-of-interest or suspects in the case. Police issued an alert for the woman's vehicle, which was missing. It was located early Wednesday morning.
