Fire Destroys Westmoreland Co. Family's Home

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Two people were taken to the hospital after their house was destroyed by fire in Westmoreland County early Monday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the fire started around 2 a.m. in the 200-block of Penn Manor Road in Hempfield Township.

A husband, wife and daughter were able to escape the fire with minor injuries. The wife was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, while the daughter is being treated for burns to her hands.

Neighbors said the two-story house went up in flames quickly.

"I was in the house and I heard somebody hollering 'Help me! Help Me!' At least I didn't know at first, but then I looked outside because I heard a lot of commotion. And then I [saw] the flames coming out the window. I called 911 and it wasn't even 10 minutes later that place was like – it was gone already before they even got here," Lenny Mahkovic said.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire, but the family believes it may have been electrical in nature.

The family lost several pets in the blaze and no firefighters were injured.
