RANKIN, Pa. (KDKA) – A man was shot and killed in Rankin on Monday evening, and police say the gunman is still on the loose.
Police who were called to the scene of a fatal shooting believe the victim was shot through his front door after responding to a knock.
The shooting happened at about 6:50 p.m. on the 300 block of 5th Avenue. Police found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the victim as 58-year-old Wilbert Barber.
For people who live in the neighborhood, they said the sound of gunfire was not the norm on this block.
"Our street has been pretty quiet," one neighbor said.
KDKA's Meghan Schiller Reports:
The victim's family gathered at the scene and told KDKA that the victim lived alone in the house for the past couple years.
"I was on my way out of the house," the victim's brother said. "My mother had called me and said to go over to the house because my brother had got shot. Then, I called my younger brother, and he said he was on his way over, then he called me and said my older brother was dead, laying on the floor. So I rushed over there as fast as I could to see what was going on."
The motive is not clear at this point, but Allegheny County Police Homicide detectives, who responded to the scene, are investigating. They canvassed the neighborhood looking for witnesses who may have seen what happened.
"My brother was a caring guy," the victim's brother said. "He would always help you out. He was always concerned. he was a real big family man."
Allegheny County Police would like to hear from anyone who might have information.
