Duquesne Light Breaker Failure Affects Parts Of Downtown
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Duquesne Light is investigating a breaker failure that affected several Pittsburgh neighborhoods Tuesday morning.
According to Duquesne Light, a breaker failed at their facility on Brunot Island around 10 a.m. Officials are calling the incident a "flicker."
As a result, they experienced a drop in voltage, which affected parts of the North Side, Manchester and Lower Downtown.
"I was just sitting in my building working at my computer and the power went out everywhere just for a second and including on my computer, so I was expecting to have to restart it, but thankfully everything was still there," said Tracey Shirra, who was affected by the outage.
Initially, KDKA-TV received reports of outages at PPG Place, Gateway Center and along Stanwix Street.
However, the outages ranged from just a few seconds to a few minutes.
"I was just working on my computer at PPG, but it happened for a split second and that was it and everything came back on," Amy Prosser, another victim of the "flicker," said.
Crews with Duquesne Light had to take ferry boats across the Ohio River to get to Bruot Island in order to repair the problem.
Duquesne Light says the breaker failure caused a dip in voltage Downtown, but other circuits quickly brought the power back. On the North Shore and in Manchester, the recovery was a bit slower. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 customers were out of juice for about 10 minutes.
All customers have had service restored.
