Dozens Of Birds Rescued From Alleged Illegal Slaughter House

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Dozens of chickens and other birds have been confiscated from what is being called an illegal slaughterhouse.

Animal Friends and federal investigators with the U.S. Department of Agriculture removed 52 chickens, seven pigeons, two ducks and a peacock from the alleged slaughterhouse in Allegheny County.

Animal Friends officials say the birds are in poor health, but are expected to survive.

"The animals were not in good shape when they arrived. Many had lice, many had bald spots; sadly, one was dead on arrival, two had to be humanely euthanized when they did arrive," said Jolene Miklas, of Animal Friends. "We expect the remaining animals to all make a full recovery and we're very happy that they'll be able to live safely."

They are now working with local farms to find permanent homes for the animals.

The investigation is ongoing.
