Crews Working To Fix Franklin Park Water Main Break

FRANKLIN PARK (KDKA) - Crews are working to fix a water main that broke this morning and sent water shooting 50 feet into the air in Franklin Park.

According to officials at the scene, the break happened near the intersection of West Ingomar Road and Bellwood Drive around 4 a.m.

The West View Water Authority says a 12-inch main broke. It's unclear why, but the pipes have been there since the 1970's.

The break caused a 9x14 foot crater in the ground and left 40 to 50 people without water.

The Caputo family, who lives nearby, awoke to a Franklin Park Police officer knocking on their door.

"When I opened the door to the officer, my entire front area was flooded. So, he was standing in about 6 inches of water at the front door and when I looked out he goes, 'There was a water main break.' And I stepped out to see and it was an incredible sight. It was very pretty," Megan Caputo said.

However, it also caused damage to Caputo's basement.

West View Water says it will send out an adjuster to assess the damage to affected homes.

Crews are hoping to restore service by mid-afternoon Monday.
