County Gives District Grant To Fix Roads Where 2 Students Died

MCKEESPORT (AP) - Allegheny County is giving a school district $175,000 to fix an intersection where two students have been killed by vehicles since 2014.

The grant will pay for four flashing neon signs to warn motorists they're traveling near the shared campus of McKeesport Area High School and the district's middle school.

Fifteen-year-old Deonte Cobbs was killed by a school bus in September, and another student, 14-year-old Alyson Higdon, was killed by a dump truck at the same intersection in March 2014.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the grant from the county redevelopment authority will also be used to straighten crosswalks and add five lamp posts to improve nighttime visibility.

The district has also hired a crossing guard and planned to install rails to keep students from crossing outside the crosswalk.
