City Sanitation Worker Struck By SUV

EAST LIBERTY (KDKA) – A sanitation worker is in critical condition after he was struck by a SUV in East Liberty Monday morning.

Local residents living in the 5000-block of Black Street in East Liberty witnessed the sight as the refuse worker collected the trash during his morning rounds.

"I was just getting my girls ready to take them to daycare and I heard a huge crash and someone screaming,"witness Alexa Belajac said. "I saw the garbage man crumpled on the ground between the car and the truck. I asked him if he could tell me his name or where he was, but he just kept saying 'Oh my God' over and over again."

The driver of the SUV was reportedly in shock after she hit the victim.

City of Pittsburgh Police crash investigators were trying to determine how the driver failed to notice the fluorescent orange outfit of the worker and the giant garbage truck in front of her.

Sgt. Dan Connolly of the Pittsburgh Police said they will be returning to the scene at the same time tomorrow morning to do a crash reconstruction to see the driver's perspective at the time of the accident. He added that sun glare could have been a factor.

Police stated that alcohol was not involved and have not yet determined if any charges will be filed.

The names of the individuals involved have yet to be released.
