City Launches Trash, Recycling Pickup App

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The City of Pittsburgh and the Urban Redevelopment Authority are launching a new trash day and recycling app called

City residents can either go online and enter their address to see when their garbage pickup will be taking place, or starting today, they can also use the app.

It sends homeowners text messages reminding them the day before their trash and recycling is due at the curb.

The messages will also include when holidays delay your pickup.

In a press release, Mayor Bill Peduto said, "This app brings together what is great about Pittsburgh: cooperation, transparency, and a shared commitment to making our city better through innovation."

The app has been in the testing stage for several months.

The idea for it was developed at the 2014 Steel City Codefest, a civic software application development competition.
