Charge Reduced Against Mother Accused Of Stealing Meds From Son's IV

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A mother accused of stealing drugs right out of her terminally-ill son's IV was in court Friday.

Karen Remsing, 42, has been undergoing psychiatric evaluations while in jail.

Police said she disconnected the computerized IV injection tube which was supplying medication to her son at Children's Hospital, filled hypodermic needles taken from the hospital supply cart and then injected herself with the drugs.

Investigators say she then tried to reconnect the tubes causing what police said was a dangerous condition for her son.

But after her psychiatric evaluation, the felony charge of endangering the welfare of a child was reduced to the misdemeanor version of that charge and Remsing waived her preliminary hearing, sending the case to trial.

Remsing faces formal arraignment next month, but it could be late fall before she faces trial.
