16-year-old high school student killed in "heartbreaking" ATV crash in West Virginia

A 16-year-old high school student was killed in an ATV crash in Hancock County, West Virginia, officials said. 

The Hancock County Sheriff's Office said in a news release on Facebook that Carter Pesacreta died in the crash on Aug. 21 in Weirton. The crash happened on Wylie Ridge Road near the intersection of Anderson Lane around 2:30 p.m., according to the news release. 

The preliminary investigation found that the 16-year-old of Newell lost control of his ATV, causing it to go off the road before rolling over an embankment. The crash remains under investigation, the sheriff's office said. 

"The Hancock County Sheriff's Office extends its deepest condolences to the Family, Friends and Oak Glen Community affected by this tragic loss," the news release said. 

In a post on Facebook, Hancock County Schools said Pesacreta attended Oak Glen High School, calling his death "heartbreaking news." 

"Our hearts go out to his parents, family and friends," the school district said. 

Counselors and social workers were available on Monday at the high school and career center to anyone in need of support. 

According to his obituary, the 16-year-old boy was on the high school's varsity football team and was an "avid" Steelers fan.

"He loved school life and the friends he made there," his loved ones wrote in his obituary. "He was outgoing, kind and loving. His love lives on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him."
