Cardinal Wuerl Set To Visit Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the former bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, is set to return to his hometown this weekend.
The newly-elevated Cardinal will celebrate Mass, which will be open to the public. It will be held on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland.
Bishop David Zubik, the current leader of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, said in a press release: "We welcome this opportunity to celebrate with Cardinal Wuerl and show him our continued love, prayer and support."
Cardinal Wuerl had served as the bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh from 1988 to 2006 when he was named the Archbishop of Washington, D.C. He also served at St. Rosalia Parish in Greenfield and St. Paul Seminary.
"Cardinal Wuerl's incredible gifts are well known, far beyond the region of southwestern Pennsylvania. Everywhere he has served, the Church has benefited enormously by his presence," Bishop Zubik added.
A Pittsburgh native, Cardinal Wuerl was both born and ordained to the priesthood in the area. More than 40 years after being ordained, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals last month.
