Best Ways To Get Involved With Breast Cancer Awareness Month In Pittsburgh

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was started as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and AstraZeneca as a way to promote awareness of early detection of breast cancer. Since then it has become a month of involvement and awareness with many breast cancer organizations participating and many showing their support by wearing pink. The symbolic pink ribbon has become an icon that is seen in many places throughout the month. If you would like to support some great organizations for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here are some ways you can get involved in Pittsburgh

If you are looking for a way to raise awareness with your family while getting fit, the Fit For Families 5k run and walk is a great way to do it. Hosted by Tanger Outlets, this 5k race will be held on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 8 a.m. The first 800 people to register will receive a T-shirt, as well as discounts and goodies. This will be the 7th year that Tanger Outlets has held this race to raise awareness of fitness as a way to help prevent cancer.

If you love dogs and also want to raise awareness for breast cancer, the Komen Pittsburgh Paws For The Cure dog walk is the event for you. The dog walk will be held at Hartwood Acres in the concert area. The event will be held Sunday Oct. 4 at 9 a.m. The first 750 people to register will receive a cute T-shirt showing their support of the cause. You can sign up for the walk, set up a fundraising page, sponsor a participant or make a donation on the event website.

Oct. 16-26

Among the program events that the PA Breast Cancer Coalition is facilitating is the traveling photo exhibit which will be in Pittsburgh just in time for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The exhibit features 67 women from all 67 Pennsylvania Counties who have struggled with breast cancer. The message of the exhibit is to practice early detection of breast cancer. There will be a kick off event on Friday, Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m. and the exhibit will run through Oct. 26. Visit the website to RSVP for the kickoff party.

Each year, The Crush Charity Fashion Show benefits a different charity. This year's chosen charity is the PA Breast Cancer Coalition. The fashion show will be held on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. The event features clothing by the best local designers as well as live local music and local models.
