Best Indian Food Around Pittsburgh

Authentic Middle Eastern food is hard to come by in the Pittsburgh, but fans of the cuisine have found a few hot spots in the area. Whether you're in the mood for falafel, naan, Jeera rice or Indian curry, you'll be able to find it at these restaurants. Here are some of KDKA's staff picks.

Indian Spices

129 6th Street; Downtown

Sometimes the food with the biggest flavor comes from the smallest, simplest restaurants. That's the case with Indian Spices. One KDKA staffer wrote, "The decor is very simple. The food is not. I recommend the chicken Tikka Masala. It will change your life." This restaurant is a big hit with downtown workers. It offers a weekday lunch buffet for just $7.50 per person.

India Palace Cuisine

137 6th Street

Patrons of this restaurant love its traditional Indian cuisine. It recently moved to its current location, giving downtown restaurant goers a brand new Indian restaurant to visit. Fans say they have a great selection of chutneys, relishes and sauces. The staff will increase the heat of your meal upon request. One KDKA staff member says, "Best Indian food in town."

India Garden

328 Atwood St.; Oakland

3813 William Penn Highway; Monroeville

India Garden offers a huge lunch buffet to its patrons. They even have 50% off select dinners during Happy Hour. One KDKA staff member says the restaurant has, "A great selection." Their large menu has a little bit of everything, including combo meals, breads and tandoori, specials, side dishes and desserts.

Star of India

412 S. Craig Street; Oakland

Fans of this restaurant love the atmosphere. The decor is authentic, as is the food. The staff is willing to customize your dish, and patrons love the friendly service.

Tamarind Flavor of India

257 N. Craig Street; Oakland

Unlike some other establishments in town, Tamarind offers South Indian food. The restaurant integrates more spices and heat into their recipes. They also offer dosas, which are similar to crepes. Patrons say Tamarind has reasonable prices and offer student discounts, making it popular with college-aged young adults.

Taj Mahal Fine India Restaurant

7795 McKnight Road; Ross Township

The Taj Mahal offers Mughlai, North, South and other regional Indian cuisine. Pittsburgh Magazine voted it the area's Best Indian Restaurant of 2010. Patrons enjoy dining on their fresh yogurt and cheese, which is made daily. In addition to eat-in seating, the restaurant does catering and take-out as well.
