PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It was three years ago that Pittsburgh police officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo II were killed in a standoff in Stanton Heights.
Wednesday night, friends, relatives and fellow officers attended a special memorial service for the patrolmen at St. Joseph Church in Bloomfield.
Organizers say they wanted it to be a solemn tribute, but also an uplifting celebration of their lives and the sacrifices they made.
Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said, "We always pledged that day that we would never forget the sacrifice that they made and we're here again tonight to thank them, to pray for the families and remember."
Commander Timothy O'Connor who oversees the Zone 5 Police Station told KDKA's Kym Gable, "We didn't want to rip open wounds that are starting to heal and we don't want them to remain forgotten, so this struck a very nice balance I think."
It was also announced tonight that the police memorial that stands outside the church will be maintained through continued support from donors and with help from the Pittsburgh Foundation.
