Sofia, born in Athens in 1938, is the oldest daughter of King Paul I of Greece and, like King Juan Carlos, she grew up in exile during World War II. They were married May 14, 1962, in Athens.

Felipe, the heir to the throne, is the third child of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. He was born on Jan. 30, 1968. The 6-foot-5-inch prince served in the military, like his father before him, was educated at the University of Madrid and Georgetown University. He was a member of the Spanish Olympic Sailing team in 1992.
