In his speech Friday during the opening of the 5th Summit of the Americas, President Obama told other leaders, "We have at times been disengaged, and at times we sought to dictate our terms. But I pledge to you that we seek an equal partnership. There is no senior partner and junior partner in our relations."

At a morning meeting of UNASUR on Saturday, April 18, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez handed President Obama a copy of a book: "The Open Veins of Latin America," about the exploitation of the region by North American and European interests. Asked later about the present, Mr. Obama replied, "I thought it was one of Chavez' books. I was going to give him one of mine."
