Supreme Court of Pa. rules mandatory life sentences for 2nd-degree murder unconstitutional

The highest court in Pennsylvania ruled Thursday that the state's mandatory minimum sentence for second-degree murder was unconstitutional. Under sentencing guidelines, anyone convicted of the offense had to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, a punishment that justices said did not always fit the crime.
