Woman And Two Young Children Hospitalized After Being Hit By Tow Truck

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- According to Philadelphia Police, a 24-year-old woman and two children, ages three and one, were struck by a tow truck on Monday night. The incident occurred shortly before 7:00 p.m. on the 3300 block of B Street.

The woman was placed in critical condition following the accident and was taken to Temple University Hospital. Police say she suffered from head trauma when they arrived on the scene.

Officials say the two children were taken to St. Christopher's. The three-year-old was placed in critical condition and the one-year-old was placed in stable condition.

Police say prior to their arrival, a Good Samaritan picked up the two young girls who were lying in the street. Authorities say they too suffered from head trauma. The person who picked up the children took them to the hospital.

Officials say that according to preliminary information, the 24-year-old was walking with the two children who were possibly in a stroller. As they crossed B Street, a 53-year-old operating a tow truck struck them.

Police say the tow truck did remain on the scene.

Medic 47B transported the 24-year-old to Temple Hospital where she was listed in critical condition with a broken spine, a broken pelvis and multiple fractures to the left side of her face; unit #3 and #4 were transported to St. Christopher's Hospital by a private vehicle.  Unit #3 was listed in critical condition in the ICU with a skull fracture and neck injuries; unit #4 was listed in stable condition with minor cuts and bruises.

Truck Enforcement was on location to perform a safety check on unit #1.  There was no leaving the scene and no DUI suspected.
