Whining Puppies

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's a puppy's natural inclination to whine and cry at times. It's the natural way of survival to make sure that he or she is heard and that the puppy's basic needs are met.

A puppy will cry or whine if he or she is cold, wet, uncomfortable, hungry, thirsty, sick, needs to go out, is tired, in pain, frightened or lonely, etc. A puppy may be fearful or panic when left alone for fear of abandonment by the pack. Before adopting a puppy too early, be aware that for the sake of the puppy's health, physically and psychologically, he or she should remain with the mother until at least 8 weeks but preferably 12 weeks of age.

Always check to see what's causing your puppy to seek your attention by whining. Make sure that all of your puppy's needs are met sufficiently. Make sure to take your puppy out for relief frequently, provide safe and tasty chew toys, offer playtime for mental stimulation, exercise and daily walks. Place an item of clothing with your scent on it in your puppy's sleeping area. Some find it helpful to place a ticking clock wrapped in a towel near your puppy for comfort and security (mimicking a heartbeat) and a steady sound to help the puppy to sleep.
