Weekend Box Office Report: 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' Takes Top Spot
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The animated comedy, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which finished in second place on its opening weekend, climbed into the top spot on its second weekend of release by earning an estimated $21-million.
That put it ahead of last weekend's box office leader, 300: Rise of an Empire, which took in $19-million.
Coming in at a close third was the new racing-car thriller, Need for Speed, starring Aaron Paul, which earned $18-million.
in fourth, with $11-million, was the holdover Liam Neeson thriller, Non-Stop.
And rounding out the top five was the debuting Tyler Perry comedy-drama, The Single Moms Club. It totaled $8-million.
Another new attraction, Veronica Mars, the Kickstarter-funded movie version of the TV series starring Kristen Bell, finished tenth by taking in $2-million despite opening in a very modest lineup of theaters and being simultaneously available on Video on Demand.
Overall, industry-wide totals were slightly ahead of those of a year ago.
