Weekend Box Office Report: 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Back On Top
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In a rare occurrence, the box office leader of the first weekend in August is back on top three weeks later.
The comic book-generated holdover, Guardians of the Galaxy, earned an estimated $18-million for a second first-place finish.
Not far behind was the runnerup holdover, also comic book-inspired, the remake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which totaled $17-million.
And still close to the top was the third-place finisher, If I Stay, the debuting life-versus-death drama based on the young-adult best-seller. It took in $16-million.
The two other new attractions placed among the top eight spots:
The inspirational football drama, When the Game Stands Tall, was fifth with $9-million.
And the sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, earned $6-million, good for eighth place.
Overall, industry-wide totals were modest, a typical result as August winds down, but were still slightly ahead of last year's pace.
