We Get By With A Little Help From Our Friends
Behind every gardener – great or not - there's somebody doing the digging – or some other chore that you dislike. I love picking out plants, combining colors, and deciding what goes where. I'm happy to plant annuals, perennials and bulbs, and don't mind pruning, deadheading or even weeding. But I hate to dig. It seems to take forever – partly because I'm not very strong, and I'm even less patient, so I can't dig a hole as deep or wide as I need fast enough.
But luckily, I have a pal who does the digging for me – all I have to do is point to a spot in the yard and Fred will use a shovel and his strength to carefully create a perfect place for each tree or shrub to grow. He even puts the soil in a tidy pile next to the hole so I can use it to backfill easily. All the trees and shrubs we've planted would probably still be sitting in pots if it weren't for him.
So take this as a reminder to thank the pals in your life who take on the chores you like least – without their help, just imagine what a mess your garden might be.
