Vigil Held To Remember Robbinsville Superintendent Dr. Steven Mayer

By Greg Argos

ROBBINSVILLE, Nj. (CBS) -- Robbinsville Superintendent Dr. Steven J. Mayer was running this morning when police say a 17-year-old driver struck and killed him. Hundreds gathered to pay their respects at a vigil on Tuesday night.

"I'm not going to lie. I don't have the words tonight that can make the pain go away," said Robbinsville School Board President Matthew O'Grady.

However, this community has the connection to get through this difficult time. "I know that he's looking down right now and he's smiling because he knows Robbinsville is strong," O'Grady added.

Mayer lost his life when he was struck and killed as jogged before work. The driver was a student at Robbinsville High School.

"The accident remains under investigation," said Robbinsville's acting Police Chief, Lt. Chris Nitti. "No criminal charges have been issued at this time."

"Be with one another. Talk to one another. Keep the families in your prayers," said Mayor Dave Fried.

Through tears, hugs and reflection, Robbinsville began the healing process.

"Just his presence about being around everyone," said 7th grade student Claire Jaoude. "How he's always like happy and faithful towards everyone. He was just always positive."

After the vigil ended, hundreds of people stayed there gathered. It was a testament to the impact Mayer had on the community.

"It's just amazing that it's not just in the school," said 7th grade student Cameron Coyle. "It's just so many people around the community that possibly didn't even know him, but are still affected."
