1 Dead, Dozens Injured After Train Hits Wall At Hoboken Station

HOBOKEN, NJ (CBS/AP) --  A crowded commuter train crashed into the bustling Hoboken station during the morning rush hour Thursday, killing at least one person and injuring more than 100 others, some critically, in a tangle of broken concrete, twisted metal and dangling cables, authorities said.

 

Governor Christie said it was not a person on the train who died, but most of the injuries were those on the train. Later in the afternoon, the New Jersey medical examiner's office identified the woman who died as 34-year-old Fabiola Bittar de Kroon of Hoboken.

People pulled concrete off bleeding victims and passengers kicked out windows and crawled out amid crying and screaming after the arriving New Jersey Transit train smashed through a barrier at the end of its track and ground to a halt in a covered waiting area.

It apparently knocked out pillars, collapsing a section of the roof onto the first car.

 

During a press conference, medics said the Jersey City Medical Center took 40 walk ins and nine to 11 people were in the emergency room.

Medics said no one at Jersey City Medical Center have life-threatening injuries.

TV footage and photos from the scene show damage to the rail car and extensive structural damage to the Hoboken station.

Radio station WFAN anchor John Minko told New York radio station WINS that the train "went right through the barriers and into the reception area."

Rail service was suspended in and out of Hoboken, which is directly across the Hudson River from New York City.

NJ Transit released the following statement on the crash:

'At approximately 8:45 a.m. train #1614, a Pascack Valley line departure from Spring Valley operating to Hoboken, struck the Hoboken Terminal building on track 5.  Initial reports indicate multiple critical injuries.  Rail service in/out of Hoboken is suspended due to the incident.  HBLR and PATH are also suspended into and out of Hoboken Terminal.   NJ TRANSIT bus, private carriers and ferry services are cross-honoring NJT rail tickets and passes.' 

Governor Christie shared an updated service plan for NJ Transit service on Thursday afternoon.

Uber Refunding All Rides From Hoboken Train Station After Crash

The NTSB confirms it is investigating the crash. The cause was not immediately known. The NTSB addressed their investigation in a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Governor Cuomo said at a press conference, "We do not know the circumstances."

None of NJ Transit's trains are fully equipped with positive train control, a safety system designed to prevent accidents by automatically slowing or stopping trains that are going too fast.

The industry is under government orders to install PTC, but the deadline has been repeatedly extended by regulators at the request of the railroads. The deadline is now the end of 2018.

In 2015, eight people were killed and more than 200 were injured when an Amtrak train derailed in Philadelphia.
