Top Sandwiches Under $10 In Philadelphia

Along with water ice, soft pretzels and Tasty Kakes, Philadelphia is also home to a number of great sandwiches. In fact, a Philly favorite was even named "Best Sandwich in America" on the Travel Channel. Of course, there's the iconic Philly cheesesteak, but it doesn't stop there. These Philadelphia spots are serving up delicious pork, seafood, veggies, cheese and more all on tasty bread and for under $10.

With a commitment to high quality, excellent service and reasonable prices, Ippolito's has been a South Philly landmark since 1929. While you can get everything from an Italian-style roasted brisket to a surf and turf cheesesteak, it's "The Overboard" that receives the most rave reviews. A fresh breaded and fried piece of flounder is served on soft country white bread and then topped with cole slaw, hot sauce, tartar sauce and French fries. The $9 sandwich can be paired with a side of fries or a small salad for an additional dollar.

Joe's Steaks + Soda Shop (formerly Chink's) has been serving affordable milkshakes, cupcakes, floats, sodas, burgers, steaks and more since 1949. The cheesesteaks are clearly the main draw at Joe's, with a small setting you back just $5.75 and a large priced at $7.95. Another favorite, the cheese hot sausage sandwich, is made with sausage from Maglio of South Philly and is just $4.75 for a small or $7.50 for a large. Extending its menu beyond meaty offerings, Joe's now serves several chicken sandwiches and even a veggie choice, all under $8 for a large. After deciding to open on Sundays for the first time recently, you can now enjoy Joe's every day of the week.

While you can now get a Schmitter at Citizens Bank Park during a Phillies game, this favorite sandwich has been a Chestnut Hill staple since McNally's Tavern started making them in the mid 1960s. A cousin to the Philly cheesesteak, this sandwich is made with a higher grade of sliced beef (similar to the restaurant's roast beef), fried onions, cheese, tomatoes and cooked salami. Grilled, melted and topped with the special house-made Schmitter sauce (similar to a Russian dressing), the sandwich is served in a flash-broiled Kaiser roll for $8.75. A double-meat version served on a long hoagie roll is also available for $14.65.

Offering a variety of dishes inspired by Latin American, Caribbean and Cuban cuisine, Mixto is probably best known for classics such as arroz con pollo and ropa vieja. But if you visit during lunch hours, the Cuban sandwich is a must-try. The Cuban-style panini is made on a press called a plancha and features ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, a homemade garlic spread, mustard and pickles. The $9 hot-pressed sandwich is served on a traditional Cuban roll and includes a side of plantain chips. Don't forget to order an authentic mojito or margarita to wash it all down!

The inevitable lines that form at Dinic's each day are a strong indication of just how good the sandwiches are. The roast pork sandwich was crowned "Best Sandwich in America" by Adam Richman of the Travel Channel in 2012, but Philadelphians could have already told you that. The iconic sandwich includes thinly sliced roast pork topped with broccoli rabe, extra-sharpe provolone and a splash of au jus. Served on a large hoagie roll, this colossal sandwich could easily be split between two people or feed one hungry person for just about $10. Don't let the crowds intimidate you. While chances of getting a seat are slim, the roast pork is well worth the wait in line.
