Enjoy a stroll, horseback ride or bike ride through scenic Valley Forge National History Park, located in the King of Prussia area in the suburbs of Philadelphia. This national treasure has an excellent network of hiking trails on the western side of the park, says Philadelphia-area hiking expert Shane O'Donnell, who recommends both Mount Joy and Mount Misery trails for spectacular fall foliage views. Both trails can be accessed from Washington's Headquarters, where there are bathrooms and parking, O'Donnell says, adding that both trails offer moderate to difficult hilly wooded climbs with some interesting ruins along the way. Start at the Horse-Shoe Trail and head to the Mount Misery Trail and take the Valley Creek Trail back for a nice, easy return, O'Donnell recommends. The Mount Joy Trail, he adds, is a slightly easier out-and-back, but can be turned into larger loops using the Joseph Plumb Martin Trail or the Valley Creek Trail. Valley Forge National Historic Park is also a mecca for birdwatchers, with over 227 species of fowl visiting the park's 3,500 acres of woods, wetlands and meadows.
