The Eagles' Good, Bad & Ugly
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — There was a lot to dislike, hardly anything to like and not much to look forward to after the Eagles blew their season in a 38-24 loss to Washington at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
The Good
Tight end Zach Ertz caught two passes for 21 yards on the Eagles' opening drive. It helped the Eagles up the field for an early 7-0 lead. Ertz was targeted nine times and finished with 13 catches for 122 yards and a lone bright spot in a dismal outcome.
Receiver Jordan Matthews' first quarter. He caught two passes for 54 yards, including a 43-yard reception.
Defensive end Fletcher Cox's two sacks for minus-14 yards. Again, the Pro Bowl defensive lineman was superb.
The Bad
Linebacker DeMeco Ryans failed to pick up tight end Jordan Reed on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins with 5:50 left in the first quarter. Fortunately, Dustin Hopkins missed the extra point on the blown assignment.
Linebacker Mychal Kendricks faulty coverage of Reed on the 12-yard touchdown pass from Cousins, concluding a 7-play, 61-yard drive that gave Washington a 13-7 with 1:00 left in the first quarter.
Left tackle Jason Peters going offsides on first down during the Eagles' second drive. It made a first-and-10 to a first-and-15 at the Philadelphia 26. It hurt the drive, which stalled quickly. Peters was also called for a holding penalty early in the second quarter. It was Peters' man, Preston Smith, who pulled Sam Bradford down for a minus-6 yard sack.
Right tackle Lane Johnson getting flagged for an illegal formation with 12:00 left in the second quarter.
Right guard Matt Tobin getting flagged for a false start the play after Lane Johnson's illegal formation penalty.
Left guard Allen Barbre getting flagged for a false start with 6:54 left in the half.
Quarterback Sam Bradford missing a wide open Ertz down the sideline with 10:25 left in the first half. Ertz would have easily scored if the pass was on target.
Cornerback E.J. Biggers was the target on Washington's second drive, which resulted in a five-play, 69-yard series and a Washington score.
The Ugly
Running back DeMarco Murray began running without the ball and fumbled, which resulted in a 17-yard TD fumble return by DeAngelo Hall with 3:15 left in the third quarter. That pretty much clinched it for the Redskins.
Receiver Nelson Agholor dropping a slightly underthrown Bradford pass in the end zone with 6:06 left in the half.
Quarterback Bradford overthrowing a wide-open Agholor in the end zone with 5:30 left in the third quarter, with the Eagles down 23-10.
