Some Temple University students feel better as campus steps up security after large crowds of unsupervised minors
Temple Police are beefing up security ahead of the weekend. CBS News Philadelphia spotted a heavy police presence around campus on Friday.
Even the mounted patrol unit was there.
"Overall, it's cool. It's safe. I feel better," said Bri Hampton, a student at Temple University.
Last weekend, police said a large group of unsupervised juveniles gathered around Broad and Cecil B Moore.
Investigators said at least two students were assaulted, one near Temple Towers and the other by 12th and Montgomery. The following night, police said three more assaults occurred, including one involving a Temple student.
Police say eight people were arrested and no serious injuries were reported.
But now, police are trying to avoid those meetings and large gatherings from happening again.
Temple University President John Fry sent a letter to the Temple community saying he had conversations with Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, along with other city leaders and together they are addressing the issue quickly and effectively.
"We get messages from John Fry a lot about the security on campus and it's good to know that he is looking out and that he's there and he's like making effort. You can see the effort," one student said.
"I feel secure. I feel like I am at a place where I am around people who are looking after me and making sure my safety is their number one priority," said Abdallah Abdelhady, who just graduated from dental school.
In the letter, President Fry said they are working on solutions to prevent these types of situations from affecting campus operations and disrupting and threatening students, employees, and even the North Philadelphia community.
