States In Our Area Do Not Rank Among The Most Charitable In The Nation, According To New Survey

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Apparently the states in the area are not quite as giving as others in the United States, according to a new survey.

WalletHub.com has released its list of 2015's Most and Least Charitable States.

WalletHub finds out of the 50 states, overall Delaware ranked 33rd, New Jersey 42nd and Pennsylvania 43rd.

According to WalletHub, they analyzed each of the 50 states across eight key metrics in order to identify the most and least philanthropic U.S. states. The metrics included Volunteer Rate, Percentage of Adjusted Gross Income Donated, Percentage of the Population Who Claim to Have Donated Time, People Who Donated Money to Charity, Growth in Charitable Giving, Number of Public Charities per 10,000 Residents, Community Service Requirement for High School Graduation, and Number of Volunteering Hours per Capita.

According to WalletHub, they calculated the overall score for each state and ranked them using the weighted average across all metrics.

WalletHub says they used data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Corporation for National & Community Service, Education Commission of the States (ECS), the National Center for Charitable Statistics, the Internal Revenue Service, The Chronicle of Philanthropy and Gallup.

"In terms of donating time, Pennsylvania ranked 12th with 44 percent of the population claiming to have donated time to charity. Delaware ranked slightly above average 26th with 41 percent of the state's population donating time. And, New Jersey ranked lowest out of these three states - 36th with just 38 percent of the population claiming to donate time," said WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez.

"When it comes to claiming to have donated money New Jersey ranked ninth with 66 percent of the population giving money to charity. Delaware ranked 16th with just one percent lower numbers than New Jersey. Pennsylvania ranked 35th with 60 percent of the population having donated money to charity," said Gonzalez.

So which states rank among the most charitable? Utah tops the list at No. 1, with Maryland at No. 2 and Idaho at No. 3. Rhode Island came in last at No. 50, according to the survey.
