Spring Football Update: Delaware Blue Hens

NEWARK, Del. (CBS) - The University of Delaware fell just one win short of a national championship last season, falling in the title game to Eastern Washington.

The Blue Hens had a great campaign, and they are working hard this spring to try and maintain their spot among the nation's elite.

Head coach KC Keeler (right) says he likes what he sees this spring, but they do have some holes to fill.

"We lost a great group of seniors.  They often say in football, 'You're only as good as your senior class.'  The word I use with that senior class is dependable.  Boy, those kids were just so dependable," Keeler tells KYW Newsradio. "And if you think about it, this was a group that got national recognition for their play on the field, national recognition for their academics, and we also got national recognition with our community service.   It was just a phenomenal group, so it's tough to lose them.  But we did have a good group of juniors that I think learned a lot from their leadership and now are moving in and taking over."

The Blue Hens have to replace a phenomenal secondary who is graduating, and they also need to fill a big void at quarterback, where Pat Devlin is hoping to move on to the pros.

Keeler says sophomore-to-be Trevor Sasek is expected to trigger the offense.

"Trevor has a lot of ability," Coach Keeler says.  "Here's a guy who is over six-six, very strong arm, very athletic, and got a chance to play some last year and he took us to a win against we think the best defense in our league, James Madison, on the road, when Pat (Devlin) got knocked out the second play of the game."

Delaware went 12-3 last season, and they will open the 2011 season on September 3rd at Navy.
