Southwest Non-Profit Seeks Volunteers To Help Shovel Snow For Seniors, Disabled As Next Winter Storm Approaches

By Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- ABC Men, Inc. is a Southwest non-profit that clears snowy walkways for seniors and the disabled for free.

This winter is taking a toll on the group's small, but mighty stable of volunteers.

"It's so gratifying and it just gives you so much energy to just go out and hope," volunteer Kenneth Walker said.

Kenneth Walker is one of a half dozen volunteers who travels throughout West and Southwest Philadelphia, clearing walk ways on snowy days. But with a dozen snow events already and more back breaking labor ahead, he's hoping more people come on board.

"We definitely need volunteers," Walker said.  "It hurts and I'm in pain for days and now another snow storm is coming."

Laura Cluelow lives in the Northeast and is disabled. She called ABC Men during last week's snow storm and they saved the day.

"Whatever I needed, he cleared my car in case I had to go to doctor's appointments," Cluelow said.

ABC executive director Johnetta Wleh says the group has cleared paths at 50 homes this season, but could do more if they had more help. More at
