Southern New Jersey Man Accused Of Shooting At Officer
SALEM, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities in southern New Jersey say they've finally captured a man who fired several shots at a police officer last month.
Salem County Prosecutor John Lenahan says 20-year-old Stephen Bell of Salem is charged with attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault and several weapons offenses in connection with the June 11 incident.
He was arrested early Saturday at a city home and was being held on $400,000 bail. It was not known if he had retained a lawyer.
Bell allegedly opened fire when the Salem officer tried to question him about a reported home invasion. The officer returned fire, but neither he nor Bell was hit before Bell fled the scene.
Authorities then spent several weeks trying to identify the suspect, and say some recently developed information led them to Bell.
