Sixers Announce Roster Cuts Heading Into Regular Season

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Sixers announced their roster cuts on Monday afternoon. The team carried 20 players during the preseason and was required to trim the roster down to 15 by Monday's deadline.

The Sixers released point guard Pierre Jackson, point guard Scottie Wilbekin, shooting guard J.P. Tokoto, shooting guard Jordan McRae and power forward Furkan Aldemir.

Monday's cuts mean the Sixers will go into the regular season with two healthy point guards in Isaiah Canaan and rookie T.J. McConnell. Canaan will more than likely serve as the starting point guard when the season begins and McConnell will serve as his backup.

The Sixers are still waiting for point guards Tony Wroten and Kendall Marshall to return from injury.

Tokoto was a second round selection of the Sixers this year out of North Carolina. McRae was acquired during last year's draft after being selected by the Spurs in the second round. The release of these two was likely a result of the wing depth that the Sixers have.

Nik Stauskas, Hollis Thompson, Robert Covington, JaKarr Sampson and Jerami Grant will take up most of the minutes at the shooting guard and small forward spots for the team.

Aldemir was entering his second season with the Sixers. His release was the result of an impressive preseason from rookie big man Christian Wood.

The Sixers open the regular season on Wednesday night when they take on the Celtics in Boston.
