Rizzo Struggles Against 'DROP' For At-Large City Council Renomination
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia at-large city councilman Frank Rizzo Jr., was apparently having trouble tonight shaking the charge that he ran for another term despite having entered the city's controversial "DROP" pension program.
In the Republican primary for at-large councilmember nominations, Rizzo was running a distant seventh in a field where the top five finishers get the nominations.
With about 86 percent of precincts counted, Rizzo was behind Michael Untermeyer, Joseph McColgan, David Oh, Dennis O'Brien, Al Taubenberger, and Malcolm Lazin, who was running in sixth position.
On the Democratic side, all five incumbents -- James Kenney, Bill Green, William Greenlee, Blondell Reynolds Brown, and Wilson Goode Jr. -- appeared headed for renomination, although Goode was being threatened by Sherrie Cohen, only about 1,200 votes behind with 90 percent of precincts counted.
