Red-Tailed Hawk Nesting At Franklin Institute Goes Missing
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - One of the Red-tailed Hawks nesting at the Franklin Institute has gone missing.
Word that the male hawk hasn't been seen since Saturday came on the Franklin Hawkaholics Facebook page. That means the female is doing double duty, keeping the three growing eyasses fed. The Franklin Institute's Steve Snyder says they're keeping a close eye on the situation.
"Right now, the mother seems to be doing fine. She's hunting and bringing food back, so that seems to be okay. The real concern would be if he did not return, if something has happened to him, once the babies get larger and more demanding of food, whether the mother would be able to keep up with the food demand."
Snyder says local wildlife experts are being consulted so there will be a plan in place if the job of raising three ravenous babies proves to be too much for the mother. That could involve providing extra food. You can keep an eye on the hawks at fi.edu/hawks
