Protesters Burn Flags, Climb Perimeter Fence On Day 2 Of DNC
By Dan Wing
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police say five people were arrested Tuesday near the Wells Fargo Center on day two of the Democratic National Convention.
Police say the five climbed over an outer perimeter fence around 8:30 p.m. and tried to enter a restricted area.
All were immediately arrested by police and Secret Service agents and never made it inside of the DNC.
They were taken to the Philadelphia Federal Detention Center and will appear before a judge later Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, hundreds marched on Broad Street, beginning in North Philadelphia and ending at City Hall.
"We just have a social and injustice problem," said Sonja Burketh. "It's much deeper than most people realize."
Some protesters set fire to flags and leaflets outside of the convention site.
But in a crowd of thousands, many had common causes.
Kristi Reish says, "I think in solidarity we can win. One of the chants I heard was 'the people united will never be defeated.'"
On Monday, 54 people were cited for trying to climb a similar perimeter fence.
