PPA Mistake Gives Thousands Of Drivers Refund On Citations

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Philadelphia Parking Authority is refunding drivers who were caught on camera running red lights in southwest Philadelphia earlier this year.

"There were 13,459 citations issued. They're $100 each," PPA executive director Vince Fenerty said.

The drivers ran the light at the intersection of Island Avenue and Lindbergh Boulevard between February 11 and April 13.

"Through an error made at PPA, the intersection was not posted in advance of the intersection that it was a red light camera-controlled intersection."

State law requires a 60 day notice before fines can be issued.

"We didn't post the intersection with the proper signage until February 14th," Fenerty said. "We're gonna do the right thing and reduce those citations to warnings and anyone who has paid those citations will get a refund within 30 days."

The refund only applies to fines from the Island and Lindburgh intersection.

Fenerty says the cameras are there for safety, not revenue.
