Man In Critical Condition After Being Shot By Police In North Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One man was shot in a police-involved shooting in North Philadelphia early Saturday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m., two highway patrol officers in a marked police car pulled over a Pontiac Aztek for violations at 10th St. and Germantown Ave. When one of the officers approached the vehicle, a male passenger took off on foot with a gun in-hand.

While one police officer pursued the suspect on foot, the other followed in the police vehicle. At 10th and Cumberland Sts., the officer driving the vehicle saw the suspect point his gun at the police officer who was pursuing him on foot. The officer in the police car then fired his weapon at the suspect, who was hit in the side.

Police recovered a Smith and Wesson revolver with 12 live rounds, and the suspect is now facing aggravated assault and weapons charges. Neither police officer was injured.

The suspect was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
