Positively Philadelphia: Insider Peek at Next Year's Flower Show

By Lauren Lipton

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- This may be only the middle of October, but it's never too early to get excited about the Philadelphia Flower Show.

And this week, Positively Philadelphia gives you the first word about Flower Show 2014, which opens next March.

"Flower Show is going to be 'Articulture,' and it's the celebration of art and horticulture together," says Drew Becher (in photo), president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, which runs the annual extravaganza.

"We are bringing together pretty much all of the great art museums from around the country," Becher says.  "The Getty Museum in LA is going to be here.  Obviously the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation, PAFA, Penn Museum, (and) the Gucci Museum from New York."

And there's much more.

"We'll be having an amazing exhibit of Andy Warhol photos that haven't been seen in this country in over a decade.  Currently it's on display over in Paris, and it's all his plants.  It's all his floral pictures that he's done.  It's really going to be quite impressive," Becher notes.

The Philadelphia Flower Show is the oldest and the biggest indoor flower show in the nation, and hundreds of thousands of people travel from all over each year.  Becher thinks this year's visitors will appreciate the fine arts theme:

"We've really melded all these great art institutions with great floral and landscape and garden designers, and it's just going to be spectacular to see what they can come up with.  The show's just going to be quite spectacular.  The central feature is going be amazing, and our show designer Sam Lemheney is really taking a lot of clues from... I don't think I'm giving anything away here, but it's gonna be a play on Alexander Calder, and it's going to be absolutely breathtaking, unbelievable, and there might be people dancing and bouncing off of it as well."

The show runs March 1st through 9th, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

"We know that our members and other people who come to the Flower Show love plants and love gardening, and they also love art.  So I think it's the melding of great worlds together, and I think, like never before, the show's just going to be full of color, so vibrant, and I think people will get amazing ideas of what they can do in their gardens from these great masters in their own works."

And, for this week, that's "Positively Philadelphia!"
