Police Vehicle Struck By Gunfire In Frankford

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police say a Philadelphia officer is lucky to be alive after a gunman opened fire on his unmarked cruiser in Frankford Friday night.

Authorities say the plain clothes, narcotics officer was driving east on Bridge Street at Darrah Street with two drug suspects in the back seat when he heard gunshots. He called for backup, but when he turned south onto Hedge Street, a man came out of the shadows and opened fire on the car, hitting it twice.

Police say the officer got out of the car and chased the shooter on foot into an alley. When the officer came out of the alley, police say he faced three more men pointing guns at him. He identified himself as a police officer and all three men ran. Responding officers found one of them and arrested him. Chief Inspector Scott Small says the officers involved showed a lot of restraint.

"No police officer discharged their weapon because this happened so fast," Small said.

No officers or civilians were hurt.

During the chase, police arrested a second man who was not involved in the shooting. They're still looking for the other gun-wielding men, including the one who targeted the police car.
