Police Shoot, Kill Man After Responding To Call In South Jersey

By Steve Patterson

WINSLOW Twp., N.J. (CBS) - Prosecutors are investigating a police-involved shooting Sunday in South Jersey that left one man dead.

Investigators with the Camden County Prosecutors Office tell CBS 3 Eyewitness News a Winslow Township officer shot and killed 59-year-old William Campbell. Police say Campbell was threatening a relative with a handgun.

Investigators say police responded shortly before 10:30 a.m. to a home in the 300 block of New Brooklyn Road. The call was in response to a violent domestic dispute involving the gun.

Neighbors say they watched Campbell point a gun at the responding officer before he was shot and killed:

"You point guns at cops, you're gonna get shot," says neighbor Bingo Cross. "There's criminals and there's cops. When you're looking down that barrel it really don't matter. Why would he do that?"

Police recovered a weapon at the scene. No one else was hurt.

The Officer is an 18 year veteran on the force.
