Caught On Tape: Police Officer Rescues Driver From Burning Vehicle in Cape May

CAPE MAY, N.J., (CBS) -- An incredible act of bravery caught on tape.

A Cape May police officer is being called a hero after rescuing a driver from a burning vehicle.

With smoke and flames billowing from the truck, there was no time to waste, and even less time for Cape May patrolman Scott Krissinger to second guess himself.

"A million things racing through my mind, was he stuck in the vehicle, were the doors locked," Krissinger said.

As this dashcam video shows, the six-year veteran saved the driver's life.

"I didn't know what to expect. When I opened the door, I couldn't really see. A lot of smoke came out, so I just kind of felt in the vehicle, and I felt towards his back, and I was able to grab the collar of his shirt," Krissinger said.

The dramatic scene unfolded on Sunset Boulevard.

There are indications the truck may have had a flat tire before catching fire just after 6 p.m.

The smoke apparently filled the truck cabin and overcame the driver, 61-year-old Gerald Ferrill.

Krissinger says the 61-year-old didn't speak and was semi-conscious after he pulled him to safety Monday night.

"He wasn't talking or moving, but for a moment it looked like he opened his eyes, and he looked right into my eyes," Krissinger said.

Ferrill, who was the only one in that truck, was rushed to Crozer-Chester Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

While Officer Krissinger may say he's not a hero, Ferrill's family and friends would probably disagree with that.
