Police: Mom, Son Wounded, Man Dead Following Apparent Murder-Suicide Attempt

MONROE Twp., (CBS) -- Authorities in Monroe, New Jersey say the incident that left a man dead, and a mother and son wounded, appears to be an attempted murder-suicide.

Police say that Melissa Cakmak and her 9-year-old son both suffered gunshot wounds at a home on Poplar Lane in Monroe Township. Officials add that the man believed to have shot them both, was found dead from what they believe is a self-inflicted wound. He was identified as Robert Long.

The incident occurred in the early hours on Friday, November 25.

The mother and son were taken to Cooper Medical Center for treatment. It is believed that both will survive. Cakmak suffered a wound to the torso and the son had a graze wound to his hand.

After investigating, authorities say they believe that Long had an argument with Cakmak on Thursday at his home and that the two were in a relationship. Police say she requested that he leave the home, which he did.

Authorities say Long went to another home in the area and took part in a physical altercation with the resident there, leaving before police could arrive. He was eventually stopped by an officer and charged with driving while intoxicated and then released into the care of a relative.

Police say Cakmak woke up on Friday around 1:30 a.m., and Long was there and fired two shots at her. Cakmak and her son were able to flee the home.

Authorities found Long deceased in the home around 5:00 a.m., along with what they believe was the weapon.
