Philadelphia's Low Cut Connie On Obama's Playlist
By Michael Cerio
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Just in time for summer. Wait... A couple months into summer, the White House has decided to join Spotify to release the President's Summer Playlist.
According to the White House, "When asked to pick a few of his favorite songs for the summer, the President got serious. He grabbed a pen and paper and drafted up not one, but two separate summer playlists: One for the daytime, and one for the evening."
For the daytime POTUS spins some classic R&B. The Temptations and Aretha, The Isley Brothers earn a slot as well. He goes genre jumping as Justin Timberlake brings some funk, with spirit courtesy of Florence + The Machine. There are some deeper cuts along the way, as well as a few surprises.
For Philadelphia though, none more surprising than Low Cut Connie's "Boozophilia."
How did Barack Obama stumble upon this Philly band and their tune from 2012? Was there a campaign stop at Ray's Happy Birthday Bar? Did he get his presidential bike fixed in Fishtown?
If you can figure it out, would you let the folks in Low Cut Connie know? According to a Facebook post today, they are "completely humbled and honored and confused."
Boozophilia did rank number #31 on Rolling Stones list for best songs of 2012 right between Bruce Springsteen and The Beach Boys, but Low Cut Connie for many is still a secret gem of Philadelphia. The song does mention being on the "south side of Chicago," so maybe that's what makes POTUS groove to this barroom stomper. No matter what the reasoning is, it's an honor for the Philadelphia band who's latest album Hi Honey came out in April.
President Obama also released a playlist for summer nights featuring Beyonce, Frank Sinatra, Otis Redding, and more. You can check them both out here or via Spotify.
