105-Year-Old Philadelphia Woman Shares Her Secrets To A Long Life
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia woman recently celebrated an important milestone, 105 years in the making and there's no sign of slowing down.
"I don't feel like 105," Machilla White tells Eyewitness News.
White loves life and lives it with a smile on her face. She's been smiling since she was born in June 1911. She grew up in Chicago before moving to Philadelphia where she's been for more than 80 years. She loves this city.
White's memories go back almost an entire century. She remembers hearing about World War I when she was a little girl. White said one of her clearest memories is of Chicago gangster Al Capone.
"I remember him being in the papers and I also had a fear of him. I couldn't understand why he was out there causing problems."
White has more than 100 grand, great grand, great, great grand and great, great, great grandchildren.
Spunt: 'Your family takes care of you?'
White: 'No, I take care of me!'
White's husband Lloyd was born in 1895 and died in 1971. Her son Roy takes care of her now.
"She's always been a religious person and when I see her I know that everything is possible," Roy White said.
Machilla said she eats plenty of vegetables and listens to the news. She's also paying attention to this year's presidential race.
"To me it seems wild," she says smiling.
Her advice to people is, "Put forth effort to try and live a righteous life."
She plans to be around for her 106th birthday next summer.
