Philadelphia School District Says It Won't Impose Terms On Unions Just Yet
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Today is the Philadelphia School District's deadline for its unions to make concessions. But the district says it's going to let that deadline slip for now.
A school district statement says the district is currently engaged in "positive conversations" with its labor unions and will not recommend that the School Reform Commission use its power to cancel union contracts.
The SRC had set a June 30th deadline for school unions to make $75 million in concessions to help the district close its budget gap.
The district's largest union, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, has said it would not reopen its contract. Teachers are due a three-percent raise in January.
Under state law, the SRC has the authority to cancel and rewrite contracts, but it has never used that power.
