Philadelphia Criminal Lawyer Offers Insight For Those Seeking A Career In Law

There are many challenges in the field of criminal law. It's a criminal lawyer's responsibility to help criminals get the best defense possible whether they committed a crime or not. Jason Martin, Esquire from The Martin Law Firm, finds helping someone who has allegedly committed a crime the most challenging aspect of criminal law, but feels law school provides you with the tools to analyze the situation and deliver an effective argument.

What education is needed to secure a good job as a criminal lawyer?

"A bachelor's degree from a college or university and a juris doctorate from a law school."

What is the most challenging aspect of being a criminal lawyer?

"The most challenging aspect is helping those who are alleged to have committed crimes. No one believes that someone who committed a crime should not pay a penalty; however, our Constitution is based on principles that even those accused of a crime have rights. A good criminal lawyer's job is to protect and preserve those rights. Moreover, many individuals accused of committing a crime may have made a mistake or express true remorse for their actions. The lawyer's job is to see to it that justice is served not only in defending the accused, but ensuring that the punishment fits the crime."

After graduation, how hard was it to transition to the working world?

"It can be difficult and challenging. Law school provides you with tools to think creatively, analyze a situation and prepare effective arguments. However, being a good lawyer also includes effective communication with clients and the adversary, procedures and attention to detail, which only comes with real world experience and practice."

What are some advanced courses you would suggest that would be beneficial for this career?

"Criminal law and procedure are basic courses that most, if not all, attorneys will take. Advanced courses such as Evidence, Juvenile Justice and Federal Criminal Law would help someone become well-rounded and expose them to specific matters within the criminal law sector."
