Pet Owners Learn About First Aid For Their Pets At Special Lecture At Penn's Vet School

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The public was treated to a free lecture on pet first aid Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania's school of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Debbie Mandell's lecture covered a lot of bases -- how to tell if you're dealing with an actual emergency, how to stop bleeding, performing CPR, and dealing with insect stings, among other things.

Rose Marie Deffenbach was surprised by what she learned about preventing an emergency by keeping her Westie from eating dog-toxic foods, like grapes.

"They're good for us, why aren't they good for a dog? Onions, garlic -- good for us, not for an animal, so that really helps," Deffenbach said.

Dr. Mandell also offered a basic but important tip for keeping cats safe:

"There's certainly no question that cats should stay inside. And I certainly understand there are some cats that need to be outdoors, but you need to put them on a leash like a dog, or keep them to a confined area where they can't get injured."

And that can save you heartache and money.
